How To Straighten Your Hair

First of all, If you’ve read through some of the other posts on this site, you should already know that you will need a quality ceramic flat iron for this job. Cheap drugstore irons are usually inefficient, more time consuming, and sometimes even dangerous for your hair. If you have longer hair, you might want to purchase an iron with a wide paddle, such as a 2″ iron, however, for those with shorter hair, thinner models are recommended because they’re easier to handle and maneuver.

First, you should wash your hair and condition it very well, making sure not to stay in the shower so long that it washes out. When you’re drying off, make sure to get it as dry as possible. At this point it would be a good idea, however not absolutely necessary to spray on some protective serum or leave in conditioner. Next, get a good wide toothed comb, and go through your hair, making sure to get rid of all knots if any. Now blow dry your hair, combing it as you go to keep it straight and unknotted.

Now for the straightening. Some people like to separate their hair into many very small strands in order to straighten it, though it is possible to just split it on either side of your head, which is convenient since you can just toss the finished strands over your shoulder as you progress. Grab a small section and pull it up and away from your head and clamp the iron as close to your head as you can, and then slide it out and down, straightening that one section. If you have a quality iron and cooperative hair, one pass should be enough, though each section may require 2 or more passes. Try to make the motion as smooth as possible as shaky hands could leave lines in your hair that you will have to work to get out. When you are finished, make sure to check yourself in the mirror and make sure you didn’t miss any spots, and leave the iron on until you know you’re finished styling, as you may want to hit some spots again later on. Before you leave the house remember, water will cause the molecules in your hair to stick together and which will curl and frizz the hair. After all this work, make sure you remember your umbrella if it looks like rain!
